Sixto-Clementine Vulgate
The Sixto-Clementine Vulgate is a standardized official Vulgate text that served the Roman Catholic Church for centuries. Produced in the wake of the Council of Trent's call for a dependable authoritative Latin Bible, and named for the popes under whom it was prepared and issued, it is classified as an official revision rather than a fresh translation: it covers the complete Catholic Bible, takes the Vulgate as its predecessor and base translation, and draws on the medieval Vulgate tradition as its base text. Its source language is Latin, with Hebrew and Greek consulted for reference, and its guiding philosophy was that of a standardized Vulgate. Among its distinctive features, it replaced the short-lived Sixtine edition of 1590. For generations afterward it functioned as the reference text for Catholic liturgy, study, and preaching, and it lay behind many vernacular translations made within that tradition.
