New Testament
The Scarlett New Testament is a distinct, independent English rendering of the New Testament associated with early English Universalism. Its scope is confined to the New Testament alone, translated from Greek and based on the Greek New Testament, and it is classified as a fresh translation rather than a revision of an existing English version — a notable choice in a period when the King James Version dominated English-language Scripture and most new work took the form of correction or modest updating. Its translation philosophy is idiomatic and theological in orientation, aiming at readable English while reflecting a particular doctrinal outlook. Among its distinctive features, some renderings reflect the translator's theological commitments, and it is chiefly remembered as a witness to the circulation of Universalist thought in English-speaking Christianity and to the wider tradition of privately undertaken versions produced outside official ecclesiastical sponsorship.
