New Testament
An early American attempt to bring the familiar English of the King James Version into alignment with a modern critical Greek text, Palfrey's Griesbach New Testament covers the New Testament and works from both Greek and English, taking as its base text the Griesbach Greek New Testament combined with KJV wording. Griesbach's edition, produced by a German scholar of the era in which textual criticism was first being applied systematically to the Greek manuscripts, departed at numerous points from the received text underlying the King James Version, and this revision was designed to carry those findings into English. Its guiding philosophy is a conservative revision of the English on the basis of a critical Greek text, and it is best categorized as a text-critical revision, with the King James Version serving as its predecessor and base translation. Its distinctive character lies in the nature of its alterations: changes focus heavily on textual readings rather than on wholesale replacement of style.
