New Living Translation
The Second Edition of the New Living Translation is a major reworking of the 1996 New Living Translation, undertaken to increase precision while retaining the readability that characterized its predecessor. Covering the complete Bible, it was translated from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek and rests on modern critical editions of the original-language texts. Its translation philosophy remains meaning-based, though with increased formal precision, and it is classified as a substantial revision, taking the NLT of 1996 as both its predecessor and its base translation. The NLT itself grew out of the tradition of paraphrase and dynamic-equivalence rendering that sought to make the Scriptures accessible to general readers, and it has been widely used in devotional and congregational settings. Later changes were made in 2007, 2013, and 2015, but these are comparatively minor and are not treated here as separate entries.
