New English Translation of the Septuagint
A New English Translation of the Septuagint is a landmark modern scholarly English rendering of the Septuagint and related Greek versions. The Septuagint, the ancient Greek form of the Jewish Scriptures, was read widely in Greek-speaking Jewish communities, taken up by the early church, and remains foundational for the Eastern Christian tradition; it was long known in English chiefly through older nineteenth-century versions. Prepared by an international team of scholars, this translation covers the Septuagint, or Greek Jewish Scriptures, and is a fresh translation made from Greek on the basis of critical Septuagint editions. Its philosophy is formal and scholarly, and it often models the relationship of the Greek text to its Hebrew source. It was designed in part to show how the Greek relates to its Hebrew parent text, rather than simply to read as an independent English Old Testament.
