Worsley New Testament

The Worsley New Testament is an independent English rendering of the New Testament dating from the late eighteenth century. Its scope is limited to the New Testament, and it draws on Greek and English as its source languages, working from the Greek New Testament together with English predecessors, chiefly the King James Version and earlier versions, which serve as its predecessor and base translation. It may accordingly be classed either as a fresh translation or as a revision. The work follows a plain vernacular philosophy, in keeping with a period in which a number of private scholars and clergymen produced their own renderings in the hope of making the New Testament more readily intelligible to ordinary readers than the language of the received English text then allowed. Among its distinctive features, it exercised relatively little influence on modern versions, though it remains bibliographically distinct and is noted in surveys of English Bible translation.
