Sawyer New Testament
A late revision of Leonard Sawyer's independent New Testament, this version covers the New Testament alone, translated from Greek and taking the Greek New Testament as its base text. Its approach may be characterized as readable and critical, in keeping with the nineteenth-century movement to render the scriptures in plainer contemporary English than the King James Version afforded and to take account of the critical study of the Greek text then developing. It is classed as a substantial revision, with the Sawyer New Testament of 1858 as its predecessor and base translation; Sawyer's earlier work is generally remembered as one of the first American attempts at an independent modern-language rendering. Because the present text represents a revised translation rather than a mere reprint of the earlier edition, it is catalogued here as a separate entry.
