Holy Scriptures According to the Masoretic Text
The Jewish Publication Society's Holy Scriptures was the first major committee-produced Jewish English Tanakh in the United States, issued in 1917. Its scope is the Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh, and it draws on Hebrew together with earlier English predecessors as its source languages. The rendering rests on the Masoretic Text while showing the influence of the Revised Version and the King James Version. In approach it is formal, favoring traditional English diction, and it is best classified as a fresh Jewish revision and translation, standing in succession to earlier Jewish English versions, including that of Leeser. Among its distinctive features, it retains archaic English in places and takes up Protestant Revised Version wording, revising it in accordance with Jewish interpretation. For much of the twentieth century it served as the standard English Bible in English-speaking Jewish communities, until the Society issued a wholly new translation in later decades.
