New Testament
First published in 2017 and issued in this second edition as an extensive revision, David Bentley Hart's rendering of the New Testament incorporates, according to the publisher, more than a thousand changes to the earlier text. Classified as a substantial revision of its predecessor, Hart's 2017 New Testament, it covers the New Testament in full, translated from Greek on the basis of the Greek New Testament, the critical text underlying most modern scholarly translations. Its translation philosophy remains very literal-literary, or defamiliarizing: rather than smoothing the text into idiomatic contemporary English, as many translations in the tradition running from Tyndale and the King James Version through twentieth-century versions have done, it retains the original aim of exposing the ambiguity and strangeness of the Greek. The approach places it among individual, single-translator versions produced outside the committee process typical of denominational Bibles.
